Gilroy is well known for its garlic crop and for the annual Gilroy Garlic Festival, featuring various garlicky foods. For this reason, Gilroy is named the “Garlic Capital of the World.” Held for the first time back in 1979, the three-day Gilroy Garlic Festival remains the town’s signature event and draws more than 100,000 visitors annually. Boutique wine production is a large part of the city’s western portion, mostly consisting of family estates around the base of the Santa Cruz Mountains. Some of the parks guests can find in Gilroy are the Coyote Lake-Harvey Bear Ranch County Park, Gilroy Gardens and the Henry W. Coe State Park.
